Here’s the short version: if you’re travelling on a Mauritian passport for a holiday, you don’t need to queue at an embassy. You apply online, and the approval lands in your inbox. That’s genuinely it.

The longer version still matters, because the details are where people come unstuck — the wrong visa type, a passport that’s a few weeks short, or applying three days before the flight. So here’s the whole thing, explained the way we’d walk you through it across the desk at our Vacoas office.

Do Mauritians need a visa for India?

Yes — but not the old-fashioned kind. For tourism, Mauritian passport holders travel on an e-Visa (an electronic travel authorisation) that you apply for online before you fly. No embassy appointment. No handing over your passport for three weeks.

If your trip isn’t tourism — work, study, or a stay longer than the e-Visa allows — that’s a different track, handled through the High Commission of India in Port Louis. For a normal holiday, ignore all that.

Most of our travellers have their visa approved before they’ve finished arguing about which hotel to pick.

Which e-Visa should you choose?

There are three tourist options. Nearly everyone flying out of Mauritius for a first trip needs the first one.

A word of honesty: the 30-day visa covers a 5–7 night Kashmir trip or a Delhi–Agra–Jaipur loop with room to spare. Don’t pay for five years of validity you won’t use — unless you genuinely plan to come back, in which case it’s excellent value.

What you need before you apply

• A passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, with two blank pages
• A recent passport-style photo — plain light background, full face
• A clear scan or photo of your passport bio page
• Your return or onward ticket
• Proof you can fund the trip
• Your accommodation details in India — we send you these the moment your itinerary is confirmed

That passport validity rule catches more people than anything else. Check the expiry date today, not the week before you fly.

How to apply, step by step

1. Go to the official portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa
2. Choose e-Tourist visa and select Mauritius as your nationality
3. Fill in the form — your name must match your passport exactly, including middle names
4. Upload your photo and passport page
5. Pay the fee online (it varies by visa length and season — the portal shows the current amount)
6. Wait for the approval email. Print it. Carry the printout.

Use the government site and nothing else. Search “India visa” and you’ll hit a wall of look-alike sites that charge you a premium to type your details into the same official form. They’re not scams exactly — they’re just a middleman you don’t need. If you’d rather not do it yourself at all, that’s what we’re for, and we don’t charge extra for it.

How long does the India e-Visa take?

Officially, up to about five days. In practice it’s often quicker — but never build a trip around “often”. We tell every traveller to apply two to four weeks before departure. If you’re going in tulip season (late March–April) or over the December–January peak, make it earlier: everything runs slower when everyone is applying at once.

Mistakes that get applications rejected

• Name mismatch — the form must mirror the passport, character for character
• Passport under six months — renew first, apply second
• Bad photo — busy background, cropped forehead, sunglasses on your head
• Leaving it late — there’s no fast lane once you’ve submitted
• Blank accommodation details — you need a real address in India

What about flying into Srinagar or Leh?

This one confuses people, so let’s settle it. The e-Visa is valid at a list of designated entry points — which includes the big international gateways like Delhi and Mumbai. Flying from Mauritius, that’s where you’ll land anyway.

Your onward hop to Srinagar for Kashmir, or to Leh for Ladakh, is a domestic flight. You’ve already entered India by then, so the entry-point rule simply doesn’t apply to it. Land in Delhi, clear immigration there, fly on. That’s the normal route and it works.

Arriving in India

At the airport, look for the e-Visa counter — it’s usually separate and usually shorter. They’ll take your fingerprints and photo, stamp you in, and that’s the formality done. Have three things in your hand luggage, not your checked bag: the printed approval, your return ticket, and your hotel details. Our representative is waiting on the other side.
